Contact: A Legacy 1.1

Contact: A Legacy 1.1 By LeahT

Mazyna Xasdin looked up at her spaceship in despair after her crash landing on a beach. Both engines were down, she was completely out of fuel, her emergency battery was dead, the motherboard was fried, all the main controls were stuck, and the ship was on fire. This was not where she wanted to be. Mazyna sighed heavily.

She rubbed her temples as she tried to concentrate. What was she going to do? Her ship was ruined and she could be hunted down at any moment. Mazyna was breaking the law to run away from her planet. The hounds would be after her in no time. She tried not to think of what was going to happen to her if she got caught. She shook her head of the awful images and tried to think of what she could do in the present.

She couldn't contact anyone for help. All of her equipment was inside the ship except for her tracker. Speaking of her tracker, where was she? She pulled out the little thing.

Little lines flew across the screen as it calculated her location. A name popped up. Los Aniegos... EARTH?! She shook her head violently. Oh no, no, no, no... This was not good, not good at all. Earth was not nearly far enough away. Her heart began to beat rapidly as nervousness crept up her spine. Mazyna knew the hounds would be on her trail in no time. She would be taken back to her planet where they would punish her. She shivered. A tear formed in her eye.

Mazyna turned around and looked for someone. There must be someone on this planet who can help me, she thought to herself. Someone must know how to fix a spaceship. They mustn't all be incompetent.

She hobbled over to the nearest building, which happened to be a library. She peaked in through the large window and saw one person sitting down. He had his nose buried deep into a book. Mazyna smiled to herself. He was reading! That meant he was smart! He could possibly fix her ship! She was wiggly with excitement and couldn't want to get him outside. She began to lightly tap on the glass. The man didn't look up. Mazyna grumbled to herself and waved her arms frantically. He still didn't look up. My, it must have been an interesting book! Finally, Mazyna just figured she might as well just walk into the library herself and ask him. She hoped he spoke English. It was the only Earthling language she bothered to learn on her planet.

Mazyna squeezed between the two couches and stood in front of the man. She waved her hand in front of him, but he shrugged her off.

"Go away," he mumbled.

Yes, this was English. She smiled until she realized what he had said. Her face fell, offended.

"Excuse me, but I need some help," she said politely, trying to ignore his ill-mannered remark. It was really hard when he was radiating rudeness.

He still did not look up from his book, "No."

"Please, sir..." Mazyna said desperately, "If you don't help me, I'll..."

"I said, no!" the man yelled and threw down his book. When his eyes met hers, all anger dissipated. "You're not from around here, are you?" he asked in a squeaky voice and fainted.

"Awww, why'd you do that?" Mazyna whined. "Now, I have to carry you."

She pouted and threw him over one shoulder effortlessly. She wasn't whining because it would be tough. Her species were very strong compared to humans. She was whining because she was afraid that this one wouldn't be happy about it when he woke up. Mazyna sighed.

"Please don't be so angry after your nap. Maybe you just needed some sleep, Mr. Cranky," she said optimistically.

She dropped him by her ship and waited for him to wake up. The sun started to rise and she looked at it with awe.

"Our star isn't as big as that one," Mazyna said with her yellow-orange eyes wide.

The man grumbled as he began to stir. She bounced to his side eagerly.

"Are you awake, Sir?"

"Stop calling me Sir," he swatted at the air as if to wave away the evil word. "My name is Dylan. If you have to call me anything, call me that."

She thought about it, "Oooh that's a pretty ID."

"That's not an ID, that's a name. Don't you have one?" Dylan struggled to get off the ground and face her.

"I don't know if I have a name, but my ID is Mazyna Xasdin," she said thoughtfully. "I think that may be what you Earthlings call a 'name', but I'm not sure."

"So, wait, you really are an alien?" Dylan asked and his knees started to tremble.

"Oh, please don't do fall asleep again. I don't want to have to sit by your side for an even longer amount of time... You were out for quite a while," she complained.

Dylan's eyes shifted, "How long?"

"A few... ugh, what do you call those things... I was never good at time in school. The things that come after minutes."

"Hours?!" Dylan exclaimed.

"Yep."

"I'm sorry, but I have to go, I have to--" Dylan spun around and then stopped mid-sentence when he saw the spaceship.

"What is that?" Dylan squeaked.

"A spaceship," Mazyna whispered.

"What is it doing on the beach?"

"I crashed it."

"Are you leaving anytime soon?"

"No..."

"Maz... whatever your name is! Do you know what Earth is like?" Dylan spun around. His eyes were extremely serious.

"I've never been here before, so, no..." her eyes avoided his at all costs.

He sighed, "The government will see this and they will try to find you. They will try to hunt you down and do tests on  you. They will want to know everything about you and where you are from. The tests will never end! They won't care if they hurt you. Do you understand me?"

Mazyna nodded.

"Good, now go home."

"I... can't," she said slowly. "That's why I tried so hard to find you."

"Me?!" Dylan was taken aback. "Why me?!"

Mazyna smiled, "You were reading a book!"

Dylan scoffed, "So? Plenty of people read."

"Reading doesn't make you smart here? On my planet only smart people read..." she said sadly. "So, this doesn't mean you can fix my ship?"

"No, I'm sorry, but I can't. Just hide or something. It's almost five and people are going to be on the beach soon," Dylan said, slight worry in his voice.

"Worried?" Mazyna lifted an eyebrow. "You care! Great! We can hide my ship at your house until I can fix it."

"One problem... Actually, two problems: One, I live in an apartment, not a house, so that will not fit. And two, I don't like people, so you will not fit. Got it?" Dylan talked while making big motions with his hands. It entertained Mazyna. A lot of things intrigued her about this Dylan person even though many people would consider him a big jerkface.

"But I like you," she smiled, showing off slightly sharpened canine teeth. "Besides, I found something wrong with your two problems. One, I can hide the spaceship. It can be broken down into a little capsule for portable usage. Unlike you humans, we don't waste space on parking lots. We use capsules and put them in our pockets. And your problem number two, I'm not a 'people'. I am a catonsian, or for a cute nickname, they just call us the cats. Bet you never heard of them. They are probably better than you humans. Only females of them exist. In order to breed, we have to mate with hounds, and not too many of us really want to do that. Of course, we can breed with species such as falconians, porkwosias, malwasians, and... humans," she winked at him. "Bet we sound interesting."

He nodded, "Now, tell me about--No, no, no, I will not become interested in your culture. You will not get me all wrapped around your finger..."

"Oh, Dylan, you won't let the big, bad government tear me open, will you?" she gasped dramatically and thrust her arms into the air. "You are, aren't you? You're going to let them do all those horrible tests? The sun is coming up. Is that... is that a human on the beach? Oh no... I think... I think that he is part of the government and has come to take me away!"

"Fine, fine... I'll let you come with me..." he mumbled.

"What was that? I didn't hear you," Mazyna leaned in.

"You can come with me," he said a little louder. "But please, I don't want that spaceship on fire. Put it out."

"Will do!" Mazyna said excitedly.

She found an abandoned bucket on the beach and went to and fro from the ocean until the fire was out. She brought out her capsule and minimized her spaceship to pocket size. She put it away and smiled at Dylan as a signal that she was ready to go.

Dylan began to chew on his nails, "Omigod, omigod, omigod, omigod! What am I doing? What am I doing bringing an alien home?! People are going to know! I have to tell my landlord I have someone living here at least... I could get kicked out. If I get kicked out, then I'll have nowhere to live. I'll be a bum. I don't want to be a bum! Oh why did this have to happen to me?"

"Stop whining like a hatchling from Norklon," she grumbled as she walked in.

"I have no clue what that is," Dylan straightened up.

"Oh! What a nice house you have!" she squealed and ran around looking at everything. Mazyna immediately ran into the bedroom.

"It's an apartment, not a house," he grumbled and followed her.

"Ooh, is this where I get to sleep? I've never had a bed before," Mazyna said, eyeing the bed like it was a giant piece of candy.

"No, this is my bed. You are sleeping on the couch," Dylan said sternly.

"But... there's room for two," she pouted.

Dylan's brow furrowed, "I don't think you get it. Here, we only share beds with significant others."

"What?"

"Husbands? Wives? Boyfriends? Girlfriends?" Dylan tried again.

"I got nothing."

"Mates?"

"Oh! I know what those are!" she giggled. "Well, we could be mates."

Dylan pointed to the door, "Your couch is out there."

As Dylan settled into his bed, Mazyna discovered the TV. She also discovered the volume button.

"This device is amazing! Dylan! What do you call this!" she squealed. "People live in it and jump around in costumes for our entertainment! It is just marvelous. You must tell me what this is!"

Dylan came out rubbing his eyes.

"It is a television and they do not live in it, they record it previously and then it gets sent to your TV through a TV station or something. I'm really tired. Please go to sleep," he complained.

"But there is so much on this. I cannot miss it, Dylan."

"Maz... whatever your name is..."

"Mazyna. It means Peach. I was named it because of my hair," she explained.

"Yeah, I'm just gonna call you Peach," Dylan grumbled.

Her eyes lit up and she bounced out of her seat.

"I've heard of this Earth custom!" she squealed. "It's called a pet name. You give it to someone you love. Awww you love me. Oh, Dylan, this is just so romantic. This is where I'm supposed to come up with one for you, isn't it?"

"Um, no," Dylan shifted his weight uncomfortably. "It's a nickname. One a friend gives another friend. I can't remember your name because it's so exotic, so I'm just going to call you Peach. See?"

"Call it whatever you want, Fainty-Boo, I think it's a pet name," she smiled.

"Around here, you are a pet," he grumbled and headed back off to bed.

"Wait, Dylan, don't leave!" she whimpered. "The hounds will get me."

"The hounds won't get you. I promise. As long as you are with me, no hound will mess with you."

"You're a wimp."

"Heh. I know. Go to couch and get some sleep."

"Okay..." she said uneasily and went back to rest on her couch. She thought about how Dylan had called her a friend. She knew that it wasn't a pet name, but bugging him was just so fun. Did he really think of her as a friend? He had called her that. Oh please let it be true. Mazyna, or Peach, had never experienced friendship before. Maybe the hounds wouldn't find her here. Maybe she could stay with Dylan forever.

Hound #247 ID Rovotz Vogor sniffed the air and tasted the sand. Some nearby humans thought he was some crazy guy with wicked contacts. He laughed maniacally.

"She's here."
